APS students improve on CRCT

APS students improve on CRCT

ATLANTA -- Students in Atlanta Public Schools improved their performance in 20 of the 30 grade and subject areas tested by the Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT) in 2011.

These gains exceeded state improvements in 15 of the 30 areas. School leaders attribute them to increased rigor and curriculum focus in reading, math and social studies.

"These student achievement gains came admist improvements to APS testing administration and security policies, procedures and protocols for both the 2010 and 2011 CRCT exams," said superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall.

I Spy Scandal In Atlanta Media

I Spy Scandal In Atlanta Media

There are two lovely, slaphappy, public office-related messes playing-out right now in Atlanta you won’t want to miss a moment of: the APS cheating scandal and Governor Deal’s trail of dubious dealings.

Thing is, the media attentions applied to both situations are so random and all-over-the-place it’s like Dick Cheney on a quail hunt; you never know where the shots are coming from, nor what they’re going to hit.

There is no clearinghouse of information, so you’re bound to miss something… if you’re not paying close attention.

Restaurant offers farm-to-table meals

ATLANTA -- Each Saturday morning, the chef of the Terrace on Peachtree in Downtown Atlanta takes a trip to the Peachtree Road Farmer's Market to hunt down farm fresh produce and meats.

Once there, Chef Jon Wolf scours the vendor stands for ingredients he'll use to whip up upscale farm-to-table meals for his hotel guests and visitors.

MomsLikeMe site manager Tracey Christensen was invited to accompany Chef Jon on his farmer's market excursion.  You can read more on her fresh food dining experience and see pictures of the experience in her online posting.

Goodwill receives $5.7 million grant to help those in need

ATLANTA -- Good news is coming for many Georgians who are struggling to find jobs.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis recently announced that Goodwill of North Georgia will receive $5,724,222 to help people with barriers to employment, namely ex-offenders and low-income non-custodial parents, obtain the skills they need to find work.

The funds will go toward an Enhanced Transitional Jobs Demonstration program, which offers temporary paid work experiences to more than 3,500 people nationwide. The program improves participants' employability, earnings and opportunities for advancement, not to mention their self-sufficiency and long-term success in the workforce.

"This grant provides needed support to individuals who face significant obstacles to employment," Solis said.
