Fulton County holds 'Food Talk' sessions to teach about nutrition

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- SNAP-Ed Food Talk sessions offered by Fulton County Cooperative Extension are designed to teach healthy eating on a budget for low-income parents (and other low-income individuals) who receive SNAP benefits. As the cornerstone of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrition assistance programs, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) plays a vital role in helping to improve nutrition in the Nation among low-income individuals.

The goal of SNAP-Ed is to improve the likelihood that persons eligible for SNAP will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate.

Turner Construction employees volunteer at Piedmont Park, Action Ministries

ATLANTA -- On May 6, Turner Construction employees in Atlanta joined forces with partners around the world in a day of community service. More than 60 Atlanta Turner volunteers worked at Piedmont Park and at Action Ministries in honor of the company’s 113th anniversary and its long history of community engagement.

Turner employees worldwide organized volunteer and community partnership efforts under the umbrella of the company’s “Paint the Town Blue” initiative.

In Buckhead, Turner volunteers made and bagged 1,000 lunches and snack packs for children at Action Ministries, an organization that focuses on helping Georgians with hunger relief, housing and education.

ATLANTA (WXIA) – Gunfire erupted during the height of the Thursday evening rush hour in the heart of Buckhead, at the corner of Piedmont and Lenox roads.

An off-duty police officer directing traffic at that intersection fired at suspects accused of stealing a van.

The two suspects tried to escape, but they didn't get far. They turned down what they apparently thought was a through street before crashing into a garage door.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County’s annual celebration of Older Americans Month includes an open invitation for seniors, their families and members of the community to participate in Community Days.

Each facility will host a Community Day as a part of a month of special events designed to celebrate national Older Americans month, which is recognized in May.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Get into the Act,” focuses on encouraging older adults to take charge of their health, engage in their communities, and have a positive impact on the lives of others. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.”

ATLANTA -- Turner Construction, one of Atlanta’s top construction companies, has moved to a new 10,000-square-foot office at 3495 Piedmont Road, Suite 700, in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead business district. The new space offers collaborative advantages that are allowing the company to respond quickly to client needs as business growth accelerates.

The company’s new offices occupy the seventh floor at Eleven Piedmont Center, a PC Management Company facility. Jones Lang LaSalle worked with Turner to secure the deal. Across Turner’s system of 46 offices nationally, the company has been examining its space requirements to create more efficient environments for their employees.

Fulton County kicks off Federal Older Americans Act

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County will begin its annual celebration of Older Americans Month with a proclamation which will be presented during the Board of Commissioners meeting at 10 a.m. on May 6, in the Assembly Hall of the Fulton County Government Center at 141 Pryor Street.

The proclamation is a part of a month of special events designed to celebrate national Older Americans month and the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Older Americans Act.  This national legislation was signed in July 1965 by President Johnson in order to establish services for older Americans.
