APS Lunches to go Local and Grass-Fed

ATLANTA, GA -- White Oak Pastures Owner and Georgia Organics President Will Harris is proud to announce that on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, he will be providing 158 cases of his grass-fed beef to feed students at all 90 Atlanta Public Schools.   On this day, all Atlanta Public Schools (APS) will be serving whole wheat penne pasta with meat sauce featuring Harris’ grass-fed beef that is grown and raised on White Oak Pastures farm in Bluffton, Georgia.  This is an initiative on behalf of School Food Focus to raise awareness about how easy it would be for large school districts to source grass-fed and locally grown meats for more healthful meals.

As a result of this initiative, APS will be the first urban school district servicing 48,000 students to serve grass-fed beef.  Harris will also be visiting elementary, middle and high schools in the Atlanta Public School District on October 5 and October 6 to speak with students and staff about his grass-fed beef and the benefits of sustainable, locally grown foods. 

“This is a cause that is close to my heart, and I look forward to teaching children about the values of eating cattle that are raised the way nature intended,” says Harris. “Being able to provide premium quality beef that is healthy, nutritious and tasty for Atlanta’s public school system is truly an honor.”

During the month of October, APS menus will also feature items like apples from Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge, Georgia; oranges from Florida; cabbage, romaine lettuce and sweet potatoes from North Carolina; collard greens from Georgia; and pumpkins from Tennessee.
