ATLANTA -- Bestselling author Sue Monk Kidd will hold two readings and book signings in metro Atlanta in January.

Kidd is best known for writing The Secret Life of Bees, which was made into a 2008 movie starring Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah. She is also the author of The Mermaid Chair.

Her third novel, The Invention of Wings, like her previous two books, is a celebration of women.

According to Book Atlanta:

Set in early 19th century Charleston, both an urban slave named Hetty "Handful" and a young privileged girl named Sarah Grimke find themselves yearning to have a voice in the world. When Hetty is given to Sarah as a birthday gift, the two girls' journey for freedom and independence truly begins. For the next 35 years, Hetty and Sarah's complex relationship helps shape each others' destinies as they both struggle through life's obstacles in a world that considers them both second class citizens.

Kidd will be at the First Baptist Church Decatur on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Her visit is sponsored by the Georgia Center for the Book. The church is located at 308 Clairemont Avenue.

The second signing will be held Friday, Jan. 17 at 12:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble Buckhead, which is located at 2900 Peachtree Road.
