Brookhaven 5K charity run/walk announces new location, course

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is once again gearing up for the much anticipated 8th annual Big Peach 5K Run/Walk for Blood Cancer set for May 4 and sponsored by Nike and Brookhaven-based retailer, Big Peach Running Co. Since 2006, this popular neighborhood event has raised over $107,000 towards the fight against blood cancer. This year's race will feature a new start and finish area at Town Brookhaven to coincide with the future relocation of the Big Peach Running Co. flagship store in March of this year.

The new course sarting from Town Brookhaven will place the estimated 2,000 participants onto Peachtree Road heading south towards Brookhaven Drive, then turning left into the neighborhoods, along the outside of the golf course, onto Mabry Road, Fuller Road and Osborne Roand and finally back onto Peachtree Road north to the finish at Town Brookhaven. The scenic course will be certified to comply with USA Track & Field standards and will be a 2014 Peachtree Road Race qualifier. As in past years, the finish line area will host a party with food, refreshments and plenty of fun. Brookhaven neighbors are encouraged to get involved either by participating or volunteering.

On-line registration on Active.com opens Friday, February 1 and in-store registration at all seven Big Peach Running Co. stores will open on Friday, February 15. Participants have until Wednesday, May 1 at 3 p.m. to register. Registration fees are $25 until April 15, $30 until May 3 and $35 on race day. Teams of five or more participants can sign up together and take advantage of a team member discount. All finishers will receive a Nike technical training t-shirt. Participants of any ability are welcome to take part.

All proceeds from the Big Peach 5K Run/Walk for Blood Cancer benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

"The Big Peach 5K run/Walk for Blood Cancer has been a huge success for us in the past, and it seems to get bigger and bigger every year," Javier De Jesus, LLS Marketing Manager said. "But I think as much as people want to get out and get in shape, knowing they are doing it for a cause is what has really made a difference in the number of participants. And surely, knowing that by merely completing a run or a walk, they are helping to fund research that works towards a cure for those suffering with blood cancer, that is reason enough to sign up."

Interested participants looking for tips and advice with training can join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program, the country's largest charity based sports endurance program.
