How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition.

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store.  The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

Extension staff and volunteers will take students on a guided tour of a demonstration farm where pizza ingredients are grown to teach them the origins of items found on a pizza - cheese, tomatoes, dough, pepperonis and sausage.

Other stations will focus on the importance of staying active and following the Choose My Plate nutrition guidelines.

The event is also open to home school groups.  It incorporates Georgia’s Performance Standards for fourth and fifth grade.

Pizza Farm 2013 is coordinated by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and sponsored by Georgia 4-H and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
