Fulton County Youth Commissioners Kickoff "Can-Paign to Fight Hunger"

Fulton County Youth Commissioners will kick off the “Can-Paign to Fight Hunger” on Monday, November 14, 2011, with a can collection competition among six Fulton County High Schools and four businesses.  They want to reach a goal to deliver 30 barrels of canned food to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.  The filled barrels would feed 8,550 people (285 people per barrel) in need of nutritious food.

The deadline to fill the 30 barrels is December 16.  Those organizations that collect the most cans will receive H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday) Awards.  Cans will be counted at every drop-off location to determine the winning organizations.  In 2010, Youth Commissioners collected, 5,700 cans to feed families, shelters and non-profit organizations registered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Youth Commissioners initiated the can collection campaign in 2009.   The H.O.P.E. Campaign concept originated from data collected in community focus groups and Youth Commission think-tanks. Data collected was supported by research, articles, and statistics highlighting the need for initiatives to help combat homelessness in Georgia.
