FACAA gears up for Georgia Gives Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) recently announced Georgia Gives Day, to take place on Thursday, December 6.

According to the FACAA, Georgia Gives Day gives people across the state an opportunity to donate to their choice of a nonprofit organization, an effort in total to help change the lives of people in need.

Those participating can donate to a cause nearby by searching locations, or to a cause for a special reason, where organizations are listed by category.

Norcross Cooperative Ministry initiative to raise $4.2 million

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The Norcross Cooperative Ministry announced a new initiative to raise $4.2 million over the next five years on Friday.

According to NMC Campaign Director John McCrory, Restoring Hope! will help those in need in the greater Norcross area.

Three programs will make up Restoring Hope!, including the goal to transform lives by reducing poverty, distribute emergency housing and non-food needs to families, and educate the community on needs of those living in poverty in Norcross.

Senior Pastor at Perimeter Church, Randy Pope and Jim Ellis, President of the Jim Ellis Automotive Group will serve as co-chairs of the campaign's Leadership Council. According to Ellis, this is an important initiative for NMC at a great time.

Atlanta residents invited to run for Santa... in a Speedo

ATLANTA -- The City of Atlanta is holding the fourth annual Atlanta Santa Speedo Run on Saturday, December 8.

Residents from all over the city are invited to dash down Peachtree Street dressed in Speedo swimwear attire, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The run begins at Hudson Grille, at 942 Peachtree Street. The finish line is at 15th Street.

Help the family of fallen Atlanta cop

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Police Department will hold a fundraising event this week to help the family of Officer Shawn Smiley.

Christmas Smiles for Smiley will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Park Bench Pub in Buckhead.

The event will feature an open bar with beer, wine and appetizers. Instead of paying for refreshments, the APD is asking attendees to donate money to the Smiley family.

Park Bench Pub is located at 34 Irby Avenue.

Shawn Smiley and fellow officer Richard Halford were killed in a helicopter crash Nov. 3 while searching for a missing child.

FMSA and Sandy Springs church partner for Thanksgiving

First Montessori School of Atlanta has partnered with the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church on its annual Thanksgiving Outreach Project. The church expects to provide a warm and nourishing meal for more than 350 homeless and needy individuals in the Sandy Springs area from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 22. FMSA Students Collect Eyeglasses for OneSight

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- The First Montessori School of Atlanta Kids Care Club recently collected 145 pairs of eyeglasses to benefit OneSight, a family of vision care charities dedicated to providing healthy vision, eyewear and sun protection to people in need around the world.

The FMSA Kids Care Club is comprised of 25 students, who range in age from six to eleven years old. The club empowers children to help better our world by sponsoring and participating in hands-on service projects.

The eyewear collected during the month-long drive included reading glasses, bifocals, sunglasses and non-prescription glasses, said Kids Care Club Coordinator Heather South. The glasses were given to LensCrafters to distribute through OneSight.

ATLANTA -- All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) – Atlanta’s preeminent nonprofit provider of support services for families living with developmental disabilities – is entering its new fiscal year with an updated Board of Directors.  The agency has appointed community volunteer Nancy Rizor; developmental disability service leader Janet P. Deal; and accounting professional Charles T. Lundquist as new additions to its Board of Directors.
