2012 Legacy Breakfast Recognizes Advocacy Efforts of Families Living with Developmental Disabilities

All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) honored the Pease family of Buckhead at its 2012 Legacy Breakfast. The award was presented at the organization’s 2012 Legacy Breakfast, held Oct. 11 at the Atlanta History Center. More than 300 attended the event, which raised money to support services, advocacy and training for families living with developmental disabilities.

“So many of those who attend the Legacy Breakfast have a personal connection to developmental disabilities, be it a child, a sibling, or a relative,” said Bari Love, co-chair of the event. “The money raised at this year’s event will help hundreds of families in Georgia better support their loved ones with services to integrate them better into their communities.”

Get a $2 'Boorito' for wearing a costume to Chipotle

ATLANTA -- Scare up a tasty dinner -- and do some good for the community -- by wearing a costume to any Chipotle Mexican Grill on Halloween.

Chipotle customers who arrive in costume between 4 p.m. and close on Wednesday, Oct. 31 will be treated to a burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos for only $2.

"We have always believed that good food should be affordable and accessible to everyone, and our annual Boorito fundraiser is a great opportunity for customers to enjoy a $2 burrito while supporting a great cause," Chipotle founder, chairman and co-CEO Steve Ells said in a statement.

The great cause in question is the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, a nonprofit that works to create a sustainable healthy food supply and raise awareness of food issues. Up to $1 million in proceeds from the Boorito event will go to the charity.

Habersham Gardens Hosts FMSA Art Show

Habersham Gardens Hosts FMSA Art Show

MIDTOWN -- Habersham Gardens, located in Midtown Atlanta, welcomed fall with an art show by students of First Montessori School of Atlanta. Approximately 185 colorful pinwheels, sunflowers and seed packets were displayed during the evening reception.

Art Teacher Theresa Dean mixed history with art, exposing students to early American art and how seed packets were originally produced. Since many farmers in early America couldn't read, packets included both images and text. When designing their artwork, some FMSA students got very creative and made up names for their plants, she said.

The students drew sunflowers, outlined them with black glue and then painted them with water colors.

"This is the third year we've worked with Habersham Gardens on this fun event," said Head of School Jerri King.

Chastain named Atlanta's most connected neighborhood

Chastain named Atlanta's most connected neighborhood

ATLANTA -- Chastain is the most connected neighborhood in Atlanta, according to a new list.

The list was released Tuesday by Nextdoor, a private social network for neighborhoods. To make the list, a neighborhood must actively use Nextdoor's technology to organize events, report local crime, meet new people and more.

"These neighborhoods are using technology to build stronger, safer, more connected places to call home," Nextdoor spokesperson Kelsey Grady said in a statement.

Avondale Estates was named Atlanta's second-most connected neighborhood. Virginia Highland was No. 3; Sexton Woods in Chamblee was No. 4; and the Paces Civic Association was No. 5.
