Muhammad named new chair of Atlanta schools

ATLANTA -- Brenda Muhammad was elected the Chairwoman of the Atlanta School Board during an emergency session Wednesday morning. She replaces Khaatim Sherrer El, who stepped down.

Muhammad was the only board member nominated to the Chair position. She was elected by a seven-to-one majority. Board Member Emmett Johnson cast the lone dissenting vote.

Muhammad will serve as Chairwoman of the Board until the end of the current term, at the end of this year.

The Atlanta School Board was forced to elect a new chair following pressure from constituents, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to make changes in the Board's leadership.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Reed said he was pleased with the moves from the board.

"I am pleased that the Atlanta Board of Education has taken decisive action today to address its governance issues in a meaningful way by electing Brenda Muhammad as its new chairwoman. I have known Brenda for many years and believe she is a capable leader who will help bring stability back to the board," Reed said in the statement. "I am optimistic that her election will allow the school board to work together cohesively to effectively satisfy the six requirements outlined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to avoid a loss of accreditation for the district. I am also hopeful the board will identify and recruit a high-caliber permanent superintendent and continue investigating the CRCT test score discrepancies. Most important of all, I look forward to the board giving its full attention to educating and enriching the 49,000 students who attend our city's schools. A world-class K-12 public education system should be the board's number one goal."

The Atlanta Public School System has been put on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school system has also faced accusations of cheating on standardized tests.

The Atlanta Public School system recently named Errol Davis Jr. as Interim Superintendent, effective July 1. Dr. Beverly Hall, the current Superintendent is stepping down on June 30.
