A RunnerCam Peachtree PR!

ATLANTA -- 11Alive's exclusive coverage of the AJC Peachtree Road Race includes a unique tradition: RunnerCam. 11Alive reporters Julie Wolfe and Doug Richards first ran the Peachtree on camera together 12 years ago. Julie was an intern at an Atlanta TV station, and Doug was a reporter.

In 2011, when 11Alive became the official media sponsor of the race, the two resurrected the idea. Both are runners and have completed the Peachtree (and much longer races) many times. But this presents a unique challenge. The technology used to broadcast a live HD signal includes a LiveU backpack, which weighs about 30 pounds. The camera connects to the pack with a four-foot cable, adding several pounds.

The extra weight makes them sweat even more than their fellow 60,000 runners. Doug wears batting gloves to keep from dropping the camera through his sweaty hands. Julie prefers stylish sweat bands. Tuesday, they did a test run. And on July 4th, they set a RunnerCam PR of 1:36 (clocktime). That includes several stops to do interviews and technical checks along the way.

The crowd loved the idea, and many runners cheered the RunnerCam crew on through the race. Thanks for the support!
