Rough Petco groomer caught on video, now unemployed

ATLANTA-- A groomer caught on cell phone video rough handling a dog is no longer employed at Petco.

The store on Roswell Road in Buckhead is like many others in the retail chain. It features a grooming station where the public can watch dogs getting bathed and clipped.

On March 1, a Decatur woman says she pulled up in her car and noticed the groomer treating a black dog roughly. She started recording it on her phone to document the incident.

The video shows the dog try to back away, and the groomer yank on its leg at least three times.

The woman stopped taping and went in to report to the manager, who told her he would speak to the employee.

She put the video on Facebook, and tagged Petco. It's gotten more than 1300 shares and comments in two days.

The local Petco store had no comment other than to say the situation had been handled. Petco's Corporate office in San Diego sent us a statement:

At Petco, the health and safety of pets and people is always our top priority, and we take full responsibility for all animals under our care. There are strict grooming protocols in place to ensure the safety and well being of pets, and we are very concerned by the conduct of the groomer in this video. After a thorough investigation this employee is no longer at Petco. We are in contact with both the concerned individual who took the video and the pet parent and can confirm that the dog is home and in good health.

It's a relief to dog owners who like Emily Dunn, who entrust their four legged friends to virtual strangers: "It's your biggest fear. That you worry about."
