Off-duty officer shoots 2 in Buckhead

ATLANTA (WXIA) – Gunfire erupted during the height of the Thursday evening rush hour in the heart of Buckhead, at the corner of Piedmont and Lenox roads.

An off-duty police officer directing traffic at that intersection fired at suspects accused of stealing a van.

The two suspects tried to escape, but they didn't get far. They turned down what they apparently thought was a through street before crashing into a garage door.

"They were both in the vehicle when it hit the garage door in the rear of the complex," said Atlanta Police Major Adam Lee. "At some point, I believe they tried to get away, but they were quickly apprehended."

One of the suspects was apprehended immediately, the second was caught about two blocks away.

Brett Trapp saw it all unfold when he got home from work.

"One of my neighbors passes me and says that he's hiding in my bushes in my front yard," Trapp said.

Both suspects had been shot – one in the hand, the other in the shoulder.

Atlanta Police said the van had been stolen earlier in the day in downtown Atlanta. They said the two suspects then went to Lenox Square Mall, where they were breaking into cars.

The shooting could not have come at a more chaotic time.

"We have a very quiet neighborhood – very safe, so to come home to officers and helicopters in the area is pretty unusual for this part of the neighborhood," Trapp said.

In all, there were four different crime scenes involved in the incident, so officers were in the area for several hours Thursday evening, making sure they did not miss anything.
