International jewelry thief nabbed in Atlanta

ATLANTA --  A renowned 85-year-old international jewelry thief was arrested last week in Atlanta.

Last Friday, a loss prevention officer at Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza reported observing 85-year-old Doris Payne lifting a pair of $690 earrings from a shelf and placing them in her pocket. She then quickly exited the store towards the entry to the Phipps Plaza shopping mall, according to the police report.

Payne was arrested inside the mall and the stolen earrings were recovered from her pocket, authorities say.

Atlanta Police charged Payne with theft by shoplifting greater than $500, and booked her in to the Fulton County Jail.

Payne is wanted for stealing a $33,000 ring from David Yurman Jewelers in Charlotte back in  July. She will face extradition back to North Carolina on that warrant.

Over the last decade, Payne has been arrested at least 20 times in several countries for allegedly stealing more than $2 million worth of jewelry.
