Atlanta police respond after detaining rapper leaving bank | News
ATLANTA -- Atlanta police told 11Alive on Saturday that a locally-based rapper was in no way connected to a crime at an area bank the previous day.
Police briefly detained Sam Benson - a rapper who goes by the name "Blac Youngsta" - after he left the Wells Fargo Branch in the 3200 block of Peachtree Road in Atlanta. However he was soon released and the real suspect was arrested.
Atlanta Police spokesperson Sgt. Warren Pickard said in a written statement that they were called to the bank to investigate a male who tried to cash a $24,000 check.Though police had been given the name of the alleged suspect as Charles Darnell Edward, police said the initial description of the suspect was "limited and conflicting."
"The rapper, who identified himself as 'Blac Youngsta', by coincidence happened to be at the bank at the same time," Sgt. Pickard said. "Upon police arriving on scene, they made a brief detention of him until a positive identification by the caller was made."
11Alive spoke with the rapper, who said he was withdrawing a large amount of cash to make a car purchase. When he left the bank, he was approached by police.
Benson said he was in the market for a Maybach, but after the incident at the bank, he said he was thinking about a Ferrari.
“I’m feeling fast,” Benson said.
Benson said police apologized.
