"Wig Wearing Bandits" Drive Bank Robberies Up

ATLANTA -- You might think there have been a lot of bank robberies from watching news recently. The FBI says you're right. What is troubling them most is the nature of those robberies. Many of them are violent with customers and employees being terrorized inside the banks.

On Tuesday, a man wearing a porcelain mask jumped over the counter at the Chase Bank on Piedmont Road in Atlanta. He had a gun and cleared out the teller drawers.

On Thursday, two men wearing hoodies stormed a SunTrust Bank on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings shouting orders and brandishing a gun. The FBI calls them "Takeover Robberies". They are the kind that grabs media attention and yours.

Buckhead Robber Thrwarted by Pistol-packing Cabbie

Imran Mehdi is a driver for Buckhead Safety Cab.  Stopped at a traffic light in Buckhead, a man he thought was a customer asked for a ride to Lenox.

"I picked him up and he said, 'take me to the ATM first,'" Mehdi told 11 Alive News.

"However when he got out of the cab, he went directly inside the bank," said APD Sgt. Tommie Collins.
"He went inside with a paper bag.  So that tipped me off," said Mehdi.

The cab driver says his passenger went into the bank and returned within seconds.   Brandishing a pistol, the cabdriver says the passenger forced his way back into the cab.

But the cabdriver had a weapon of his own.

Imran Mehdi says the passenger-turned-bank robber pointed a gun at him and told him to drive.  But Mehdi pulled his Ruger P-89 semi-automatic pistol, and the passenger made an abrupt exit from the cab.

One Arrested in Buckhead Bank Robbery

ATLANTA -- Police officers responded late this morning to a reported bank robbery at a SunTrust Bank branch at 3020 Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

Eyewitnesses said gunfire broke out between the bank robbery suspect and a bystander. 11Alive's Doug Richards said they bystander was a cab driver who had stopped next to the bank.

It appears the bank robber wanted to use the taxicab as a getaway vehicle, and that the driver resisted - with firepower. Police took the robbery suspect into custody along with his weapon.

No injuries were reported.

'Secure Communities' Rolls Out in Cobb, Fulton Counties

MARIETTA, GA -- A new federal program is going into effect in Cobb and Fulton Counties.  The program screens the fingerprints of people who are arrested against a national database, in an effort to verify their immigration status.  It's drawing praise and criticism.

Fingerprints are one of the few distinguishing features almost all of us have.  Being fingerprinted is an activity widely associated with being arrested for committing a crime.

Now, a new program, called Secure Communities, will run the fingerprints of those arrested, against a national database to check an inmate's immigration status.

Rob Hunter Out As Watershed Commissioner

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Watershed Management Commissioner Rob Hunter, the source of many angry e-mails to 11Alive News, will be leaving that position by the end of the week.

Hunter announced his resignation on Tuesday, but he will remain as a technical advisor on various issues, including a court-ordered overhaul of the city's water and sewer systems.

"I came to the city ... to implement the federally mandated consent decrees, manage the $4 billion capital program and organize the Department of Watershed Management," Hunter said in a prepared statement. "By the end of the year, I will have substantially accomplished those goals."

Hunter's time as commissioner has been marked by increasing anger on the part of many local residents, who have said that Hunter and the Department of Watershed Management have ignored significant billing problems and claims of overcharging on water bills.

Masked Bank Robber Can Run, But Can't Hide

ATLANTA -- For some criminals, it's all in the preparation.

The man who robbed a Buckhead bank Tuesday morning had a gun and a mask, but he didn't put the mask on until he got to the bank's lobby, and he didn't count on his face being captured by a camera hidden in a lobby ATM machine.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Lamkin is hoping someone will recognize the man in the photo from the Chase Bank on Piedmont Avenue between Lenox and Peachtree Roads. That's in the same shopping center as the Kroger and Starbucks across from Tower Place.

The suspect is described as a black male in his late 30's to late 40's who is between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was wearing prescription eye glasses, a black wool cap, a white t-shirt, blue jeans and a porcelain doll-like mask during the robbery. He also had scruffy facial hair and a silver semi-automatic handgun.
